So we have 2 elderly cats, and one of them has chronic renal failure (late stage III) and has been getting daily fluids for about a year now. Her name is Lettuce.
Oh, don’t think the other one is smooth sailing. THAT one had to have her thyroid irradiated a few years ago. Then her allergies seemed to develop into a much more serious situation in her sinuses and our regular vet packed us off to UC Davis. We were expecting a terrible cancer diagnosis, and the specialists were pretty grim like “yeahhh… she’s almost totally blocked, this is probably bad,” got her a CAT scan + biopsy, nope! Just bad sinuses for no known reason (HELLO, IDIOPATHIC, MY OLD FRIEND). She was at Davis for a day or two, and when we got her back she was perfectly fine… the flush they had to do for her CAT scan acted like a little kitty netty pot, flushed out all the crap in her head, and bam. Everything fixed with a really expensive kitty netty pot.
Really. Expensive. :: sighs ::
As I type this, I am currently expecting our vet to call us back about the blood we had drawn for her yesterday because she has been puking more than usual and we know (from our adventures at Davis) she is in early CRF and need to know the status of her kidney function. I GOT STORIES, YA’ALL.
BACK TO LETTUCE. So I don’t have an IV stand (although I swear at this rate I should just give in and buy one) and I use a wire hanger to hang the IV bag. It’s a gravity fed line, so you’ve got to hold the bag UP and the higher up the bag is, the faster it feeds (more or less)
So when I change bags, if there’s any left in the previous bag, I hang it on the cabinet handle to drain into the sink while I get out the new bag. Then I switch the new bag in and prime the new line (get all the air out of it) And I think to myself “wow, if only this was higher it’d happen faster.”
See what I mean? I mean, it drains, but it’s sorta slow…
TODAY. AFTER DOING THIS FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, I REALIZED I COULD OPEN THE CABINET DOOR AND HANG THE BAG FROM THE TOP OF THE CABINET.
I AM FACEPALMING SO HARD RIGHT NOW, GUYS.
A YEAR. GUYS. LONGER THAN THAT, ACTUALLY, PROBABLY.
MEGA DERP EXTREME.
